Concrete is the world’s most widely used building material. It consists of cement, aggregate, water, additives and admixtures. Although aggregates represent the largest part of concrete in terms of volume, cement is the key component making up the carbon footprint. Actually, 70% to 80% of the CO₂ in concrete comes from cement.

As the largest concrete producer in Slovakia and the market leader, we at Danucem are fully aware of our responsibility to protect the environment. Our long-term goal is to reduce CO₂ emissions per cubic meter of all concrete delivered to construction sites.

In line with our carbon neutrality strategy, our parent company, the CRH Group, has committed to reducing its overall emissions. In managing greenhouse gas emissions, we follow the high standards of the Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI) of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), of which the CRH Group is an active member.

Our cement plants in Rohožník and Turňa nad Bodvou are able to make use of the energy of an alternative fuel that would otherwise end up in landfills. By using alternative raw materials such as steel-making slag, we conserve natural resources and significantly reduce CO₂ production.

Danucem is a global leader in the promotion of low-carbon concrete among the CRH Group

Within the CRH Group, we now have the lowest carbon footprint per m³ of concrete, from raw material extraction to the gateway – the so-called cradle to gate. This calculation includes CO₂ emissions resulting from production and delivery of all raw materials to the production plant, as well as the energy required to manufacture concrete. The CRH Group produces approximately 26 million m³ of concrete per year across Europe and America.

In other words, Danucem, which accounts for approximately 10% of European production and 5% of global production of the CRH Group, is a clear leader in the promotion of low-carbon concrete among the CRH Group.
