The construction industry is a heavy consumer of natural resources. With a growing emphasis on the scarcity of these resources and the changing climate, pressure from the public and private sectors to reduce environmental impact is intensifying. Danucem focuses on achieving the highest standards in environmental management, and takes an active approach to address the challenges and opportunities associated with the decarbonisation of the building materials industry.

With a growing global population and continued urbanization, the demand for environmentally friendly and resource-efficient construction solutions is increasing steadily.

Sustainability in construction not only reduces the carbon footprint, but also brings long-term financial benefits, improves public health and ensures the protection of resources for future generations.

“Sustainability in construction is a key aspect that focuses on minimizing the negative environmental impacts of construction projects and promoting long-term environmental sustainability.”

Sustainability in construction involves multiple processes

The use of sustainable building solutions contributes significantly to reducing the carbon footprint associated with construction projects. Whether it concerns energy-efficient materials or the use of alternative energy sources, the industry can reduce its direct environmental impact.

Additionally, such practices promote the conservation of scarce natural resources and aim to reduce waste generation through recycling and reuse of materials, further promoting the sustainability of the construction industry.

Economic benefits of sustainability in construction

Sustainability is not only good for the environment, it brings economic benefits as well. Buildings designed with sustainability in mind tend to have lower energy costs, leading to long-term savings in operating expenses.

Such buildings often attain a higher market value and maintain better marketability. Moreover, employing sustainable practices in construction and operations can apply for a range of government incentives, while at the same time helping to avoid costly sanctions and legal issues for failing to comply with environmental regulations.

Carbon footprint reduction is a key requirement in global markets

The use of alternative raw materials and fuels in industrial manufacturing is an important trend that reflects the growing demands on sustainability. This approach is not only a response to current environmental challenges, but also a proactive step towards innovation and the long-term sustainability of industrial processes.

“Products made with sustainable technologies are increasingly sought after by consumers and business partners alike who are aware of the significance of environmental responsibility.”

The future of industrial production rests upon innovations that combine economic efficiency with environmental protection. Switching to alternative raw materials and fuels is not just an option, but also a necessity for companies seeking to move forward and be leaders in the ESG era, where reducing our carbon footprint is a fundamental requirement in global markets.

COBION low-carbon concrete is an effective way to ensure the sustainability of a construction project

The use of low-carbon concrete is a crucial step towards more sustainable construction. This material is one example of sustainable building solutions that make efficient use of available resources.

“Low-carbon concrete is a significant step forward in the quest for more sustainable construction.”

COBION low-carbon concrete is manufactured to bring a lower overall carbon footprint compared with conventional concrete. The development of this material focused not only on reducing CO₂ emissions during production, but also on retaining the same properties as traditional concrete. COBION is designed to provide the same strength, durability and performance in building structures, while its production and use bring a lower carbon footprint and thus a more sustainable future for the construction industry.

At Danucem, we are actively addressing the challenges posed by climate change and always looking for opportunities for innovative solutions. We aim to lessen the impact of environmental construction and to use energy, water and natural resources efficiently in the manufacture of building materials.

A novelty that we are bringing to Slovakia is low-carbon concrete, which will change the way we think of sustainability in construction.

COBION low-carbon concrete is an ideal solution for sustainability in construction

Concrete is one of the most important and most broadly used building materials in the world. Its versatility and durability have contributed to widespread use in a variety of construction projects, from residential buildings to infrastructure needs.

“In response to today’s environmental challenges, we decided to create COBION, a low-carbon concrete that offers a more sustainable future.”

We strive to reduce CO₂ emissions

Concrete is the second most used raw material in the world after water. The manufacturing process of cement, as the primary material needed for manufacturing concrete, is energy-intensive and releases substantial amounts of CO₂ emissions. As the regional leader in building materials, Danucem active seeks to minimize emissions and now, with our proprietary COBION technology, we are proud to state that the use of our COBION products contributes to a sustainable environment for all.

Our manufacturing processes are continually optimized in an effort to reduce energy consumption and CO₂ emissions. Low-carbon concrete was designed to feature a smaller carbon footprint than traditional concrete. The development of a modern, eco-friendly material focused on reducing CO₂ emissions during manufacturing while maintaining the same properties as conventional concrete, like strength, durability and performance, which are necessary for construction applications. This new type of concrete was created to improve the industry’s environmental impact, contributing to a more sustainable construction sector.

“Low-carbon concrete is a type of concrete with a significantly smaller carbon footprint than regular Portland concrete, with CO₂ emissions reduced by at least 30%. It is suitable for creating all kinds of load-bearing structures, whether horizontal or vertical.”

We care about sustainable construction

With innovative products and solutions, Danucem supports and shapes responsible, sustainable growth in the field of construction. We are committed to being a responsible regional leader in building materials with a clear focus on a sustainable future.

“Sustainability represents a harmonious combination of economic, ecological and social interests that is vital not only for the present, but also for future generations.”

At Danucem, we strive to build communities and environments where everyone has the opportunity to grow and succeed. In the future, we plan to continue to stand on such values as responsibility, credibility and safety, which enables our company to operate in the construction sector with a long-term, sustainable impact on society and the environment.

On the METROPOLA podcast, Judita Jančíková, Operations Manager for Concrete at Danucem Slovakia, discussed sustainability in concrete manufacturing. Danucem Slovakia has outperformed European CO₂ emission directives already as the entire company continues to work to reduce the environmental impact of concrete manufacturing worldwide. In the interview, she addressed new innovations such as COBION low-carbon concrete, which is helping build a sustainable future for the construction industry. Our continuing progress and the challenges overcome in achieving these goals were also discussed with Adrian Gubčo.

From the podcast, you will learn how Danucem differs from the competition, how the company actually fulfils its sustainability goals and truly takes real steps for a better future.

Cement accounts for 70% of emissions in concrete, so optimization of its manufacturing is key to sustainability. One way emissions are reduced is through the use of alternative raw materials and alternative fuels, or the production of mixed cements. At Danucem, sustainability is not limited to concrete manufacturing, but rather involves a broader range of projects that promote decarbonisation, including reducing transport emissions. Our comprehensive strategy reinforces our commitment to contribute to the sustainable development of the construction industry.

Due to sprawling urbanization and the increasing need for infrastructure, the demand for construction materials like concrete remains on the rise.

Concrete is a universal construction material with proven durability and unmatched availability, unfortunately the production of concrete, especially cement, impacts the environment.

This is the idea behind the search for new methods of production to reduce the carbon footprint of the construction industry. The development and use of low-carbon concrete is one of the specific ways we are efficiently eliminating the production of CO₂ and contributing to climate protection.

Concrete remains irreplaceable

Thanks to perfectly suitable physical properties, concrete has become an indispensable material in modern construction, especially for building or restoring important infrastructure. The greatest advantages of concrete are durability, universal application and fire-resistance.

Standard concrete contains cement, which plays a key role in its composition. In an analysis of a typical concrete mix, it was found that about 70 % of greenhouse gas emissions come from cement clinker, which significantly contributes to the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Due to the huge volumes of concrete necessary today, no other material can fully replace the wide range of uses concrete allows for. It can even be recycled with the crushed material serving as a substitute for natural aggregate.

What is low-carbon concrete?

Low-carbon concrete is a building material produced with a lower carbon footprint compared to traditional concrete. This product was developed by reducing CO₂ emissions during production, while at the same time ensuring equivalent properties expected of standard concrete. Low-carbon concrete provides the same strength, durability and behaviour in building structures, yet with lower environmental impact in its manufacture and use.

To create low-carbon concrete, the standard cement manufacturing processes must be adjusted in several important steps, and carbon capture and storage technologies must be installed on site.

The use of low-carbon concrete in construction projects brings a range of benefits. Low-carbon concrete helps reduce CO₂ emissions, promotes sustainability and contributes to more environmentally friendly construction industry.

What are the benefits of low-carbon concrete?

Low-carbon concrete represents a meaningful step forward in the effort to reduce the environmental impact of the construction industry as a whole. The immediate benefits, including reducing the overall carbon footprint and promoting a sustainable construction industry, make it an attractive alternative to traditional concrete. Discover all the advantages of using low-carbon concrete in construction.

Carbon footprint reduction

One of the main advantages of low-carbon concrete is its significant decrease in gasses that make up the carbon footprint. Traditional concrete is made of cement, which generates CO₂ emissions during the manufacturing process, mainly due to high-temperature limestone combustion. However, low-carbon concrete uses a cement that allows for fewer CO₂ emissions produced during the manufacturing process.

Supporting the sustainability of the construction industry

The construction industry is among the main contributors to global CO₂ emissions. Sustainable building materials such as low-carbon concrete help to reduce the environmental impact of construction activities, contributing to a more sustainable and developed economy.
